The Learn to Skate program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Figure Skating program. Lessons are taught by qualified professional skating instructors. Please direct all questions to Skating Director Cindy Sullivan at (303) 469-2100 x 16 or email csullivan@hylandhills.org

SKATING LEVELS

  • Junior Blades – For skaters 3 and up. This class is held on Tuesdays from 11:45am – 12:15pm and is made up of mostly pre-schooler’s and children that may be home schooled. This session is offered only during our September thru April class schedule.
  • Snowplow Sam 1-For skaters 4 & 5 years old with little or no skating experience. Learn basic balance and skating skills in an age-appropriate setting.
  • Snowplow Sam 2-3-for skaters ages 4-5 with some experience or who have passed Snowplow Sam 1.
  • Basic 1-8 – For ages 6 and up or those who have passed Snowplow 3. This class provides basic skating skills, both forward and backward. Skaters begin in Basic 1 and continue to work on their skills until they pass through  Basic 8.
  • Adult – For skaters 16 and older. A special class designed for the mature skater.

PROGRAM DETAILS

First day of class

  • Skaters should arrive 30 minutes early. Skaters should dress warmly, but allow for freedom of  movement. Mittens or gloves and long pants should also be worn. Young skaters should wear  a helmet or a hat.
  • For the first class, students will meet their instructors next to their posted level. The second class  and remaining classes the students will meet their instructors on the ice.

Instruction / Practice

  • All classes are 30 minutes with 30 minutes of practice offered either before or after class depending on the class the skater is enrolled in. This is for Learn to Skate participants only. Parents and/or siblings may pay a fee to skate with the student during this practice time. No games or fast skating is permitted.

Class Advancement

  • It is not unusual for skaters to repeat a class two or more times. Skaters are allowed to develop at their own pace. Skills taught build upon each other, and to move a skater up before they master a skill only makes skating more difficult. Skaters will be evaluated each session to determine progress.

  • $55 for 5-week sessions
  • $5 Discount for Westminster or Hyland Hills residents (must present a valid recreation card at time of registration).
