The "Young Champions on Ice" Program is a U.S. Figure Skating Bridge Program.  The program guides and develops the aspiring figure skater from the Learn to Skate USA Basic Skills Program (formally known as the U.S. Figure Skating Association Basic Skills Program) into the nationally recognized testing and qualifying competition structure governed by U.S. Figure Skating (USFS).  U.S. Figure Skating is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States.  U.S. Figure Skating is a member of the International Skating Union (ISU), the International Federation for Figure Skating, and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC).

Skaters transition from the Learn to Skate USA Basic Skills Membership Program into the Young Champions on Ice U.S. Figure Skating Introductory Membership Program via the Rocky Mountain Figure Skating Club (RMFSC) and finally into the RMFSC U.S. Figure Skating Full Membership Program.

Young Champions on Ice Figure Skating Information

The YCOI Bridge Program is an academy style on and off-ice group training experience designed to guide your up-and-coming athlete to the next level of figure skating.  This cost effective and fast paced program is open to those who have passed Basic level 4 in our Learn to Skate program up to the USFS Preliminary level.  Some skaters may also receive an invitation from the director if ready prior to passing Basic 4.

The program curriculum will consist of skaters being divided into level appropriate groups for a 45-minute on-ice instruction led by our specialized YCOI coaches.  The 20-minute off-ice class will be held directly after the on-ice portion, where athletes will participate in a team driven atmosphere, as a single group and work on various beneficial off-ice elements that will help skaters with their balance, stability and flexibility.  Our diverse training program will provide each athlete an opportunity to excel at a faster rate, gain tools needed for successful practice session, learn correct jump and spin technique, goal setting/achieving and much, much more!

Here are some elements that will be covered during our YCOI sessions:

  • On and off-ice jump technique
  • Spin technique
  • Artistry in motion
  • Skating skills and edge work
  • Moves in the field
  • Intro to prgram components
  • Competition prep
  • Yoga
  • Intro to ballet
  • Flexibility and strength training
  • IJS basics

Some important information to know in advance - Skaters are highly encouraged to have their own pair of figure skates.  Skate rentals are available and can be paid in advance.  We recommend visiting the Ice Centre Pro Shop when you are ready to purchase your figure skates.  Skaters enrolled in our Learn to Skate lessons or our YCOI program will receive a 10% discount on their first skate purchase.  All skaters must wear skating attire such as a skating dress with beige tights or black pants with a jacket or similar snug fitting exercise wear.  Please, no bulky loose-fitting attire or jeans.  Gloves are recommended.  Hair is to be neatly pulled back in a ponytail or up in a bun.  Hair strands should be clipped back.  For the off-ice class, skaters should wear form fitting sneakers or tennis shoes.  All YCOI skaters must have a current Learn to Skate USA annual membership or USFS membership.
