The "Young Champions on Ice" Program is a U.S. Figure Skating Bridge Program.  The program guides and develops the aspiring figure skater from the Learn to Skate USA Basic Skills Program (formally known as the U.S. Figure Skating Association Basic Skills Program) into the nationally recognized testing and qualifying competition structure governed by U.S. Figure Skating (USFS).  U.S. Figure Skating is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States.  U.S. Figure Skating is a member of the International Skating Union (ISU), the International Federation for Figure Skating, and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC).

Skaters transition from the Learn to Skate USA Basic Skills Membership Program into the Young Champions on Ice U.S. Figure Skating Introductory Membership Program via the Rocky Mountain Figure Skating Club (RMFSC) and finally into the RMFSC U.S. Figure Skating Full Membership Program.

Young Champions on Ice Figure Skating Information

YCOI is designed to help skaters excel in the sport of figure skating at a faster pace by providing a training environment in a group class setting at an affordable cost.

Skaters who participate in our Learn to Skate USA group classes in Basic 4 up to Intro to Free Skate can participate in the Young Champions on Ice classes.  The program is also offered to skaters at the non-test (Freestyle 1-6) up to the Preliminary level in USFS.

The program curriculum and format for the on-ice classes are 45 minutes in length and will be divided into groups by levels of ability.  The groups will rotate every 15 minutes to a different coach who is assigned to one of the following class segments:

  • Artistry in Motion - designed to educate skaters on the basic principles of choreography.  Concentration will be on music, movement and interpretation.
  • Skating Skills - designed to help skaters improve balance, edges, speed and control over the ice surface.
  • Spin Class - designed to help skaters become better spinners, working on spinning positions and entry edges

All skaters will then participate in a 15 minute off-ice class in the ballet room that will be immediately following the on-ice portion of the class.  The off-ice class will focus on balance, stability and flexibility.

Some important information to know in advance - Skaters are highly encouraged to have their own pair of figure skates.  Skate rentals are available and can be paid in advance.  We recommend visiting the Ice Centre Pro Shop and purchasing a Riedell brand skate.....make sure to mention that you are enrolled in our YCOI program and you will get 10% off your first pair of skates!  All skaters must wear skating attire such as a skating dress with beige tights or black pants with a jacket or similar snug fitting exercise wear.  Please, no bulky loose-fitting attire or jeans.  Gloves are recommended.  Hair is to be neatly pulled back in a ponytail or up in a bun.  Hair strands should be clipped back.  For the off-ice class, skaters should wear form fitting sneakers or tennis shoes.  All YCOI skaters must have a current Learn to Skate USA annual membership or USFS membership.

Benefits of the Young Champions on Ice Program

The program encourages additional training and involvement in special events such as participating in exhibitions and ice shows.  The program educates parents new to the sport of figure skating and acts as a prerequisite to the competitive figure skating program (U.S. Figure Skating Testing and Competition Pipeline).  The group class setting provides social interaction between skaters fostering new friendships and having fun.
